The Boy Who Cried “Wolf”
There was once a young Shepherd Boy who was sitting at a hillside and tending to his sheep. It was rather lonely for him, and he was bored, so he thought upon a plan by which he could get a little company and some excitement.
To amuse himself he took a great breath and shouted out “Wolf! Wolf! A wolf is chasing the sheep!" and the villagers came running up the hill. When they realized there is no wolf, the boy laughed at the sight of their angry faces.
This event pleased the boy so much that a few days afterwards he tried the same trick, and to his naughty delight, villagers fell for it again and came running up the hill.
But shortly after this, a wolf actually did come out from the forest, and began to approach the sheep. The boy of course shouted out “Wolf! Wolf! A wolf is chasing the sheep!”, this time even louder than before.
But this time the villagers, who had been fooled twice before, thought the boy was again deceiving them, and nobody came to help, so the wolf made a good meal off the boy’s flock.
Later the boy returned to the village in tears, and complained that no one came to his help. So a village elder told him “A liar will not be believed, even when he speaks the truth.”
